ZISS Breeding Box — Air-Driven Fry & Shrimp Breeder Box

The ZISS Breeding Box is an external, air-driven breeder box used by aquarists worldwide to safely raise fry, isolate pregnant livebearers, protect injured or bullied fish, and breed or sort shrimp. Instead of a mechanical filter or pump, it uses a gentle airlift system, so there is zero risk of fry or shrimp being pulled into an impeller.

Which model do I need? BL-1 vs BL-2 vs BL-3

All three ZISS breeder boxes share the same 2.4 L acrylic body and suction-cup mounting system. The difference is the number of stainless steel mesh panels, which controls how much extra tank water flows through the box:

  • BL-1 — stainless steel mesh bottom only. The gentlest flow; best for very small fry and delicate shrimp species.
  • BL-2 — mesh on two side panels with an acrylic bottom. A good middle ground, popular for small plecos.
  • BL-3 — mesh bottom plus two mesh side panels for maximum water exchange and oxygenation. Best when you need to watch feeding closely or raise fast-growing fry.

How it works

An external airlift, powered by any standard aquarium air pump (sold separately), continuously draws water through the stainless steel mesh panels. This keeps the temperature and water chemistry inside the box identical to the main tank, so there's no acclimation stress when fry are released later. The box always retains a minimum water level, so occupants are never left dry even if flow is briefly interrupted.

What's the difference between BL-1, BL-2 and BL-3?
The number refers to how many mesh panels the box has — more mesh means more water exchange and oxygenation. BL-1 has the gentlest flow, BL-3 the strongest.
Do I need an air pump?

Can it be used for shrimp?
